Week 7, ECC

We had another crazy week. I guess that's the norm for homeschoolers? Anyway, I don't have any fun photos to share from this week. The girls started AWANA last week and that is on Wednesday night. Last year I did a terrible job of keeping them on track, so this year I listed all the verses and activities they have to do and I'm going to print out what they need to memorize and put it on the wall for them. I'm very excited about it and I think it's going to help them get done what they need to get done for AWANA.

This week in Bible, the girls memorized Matthew 5:11 and we learned about William and Catherine Booth, the founders of the Salvation Army. In English, the girls have to memorize poems every once in a while, and Audrey did one this week. She amazes me sometimes. She did such a great job memorizing her poem! I was proud of her. The girls are both doing great in spelling as well. In math, we are pressing on with more review. Abby is learning about measurements and I was disappointed when I didn't have a yard stick, meter stick, or ruler with centimeters. I ended up printing a cm ruler, but not the yard and meter stick.

In geography, we have been playing the North America geography game. I'm amazed (again) at how much the girls learned. They can identify the Caribbean Islands and countries in North and Central America.

For science, the girls learned about scavengers and decomposers. It was neat to see that they learned something when we were taking a walk one day and we saw a dead bird on the sidewalk. We had a good talk about the decomposers that were at work.

We've slacked off a bit with reading Cameron Townsend. I'm disappointed about it, and we are going to try to do better. We really enjoy reading it.

We took Thursday off because it was Andrew's birthday. The girls and I went to the store in the morning to buy cake mix and frosting. Then we baked the cake, and in the afternoon, I tried to get as much of my schoolwork done as possible so I could spend the evening with Andrew. We had a good day, even without school getting done. I'm loving the flexibility of homeschooling.

  1. I'm glad you are enjoying the flexibility! Me, too.

I am with you about AWANA verses. I wanted to find a way for Sydney to *retain* what she was memorizing, instead of just learning a verse each week like she did for Cubbies. She is very motivated by the jewels she receives in Sparks. :) So, our goal is to get through about 5 sections/week. In the new HangGlider handbooks, this is usually about 3-4 verses and one review verse. I am amazed at how well she can memorize these verses...and so quickly! It is my goal to memorize them with her, since I never did it as a child, so I make it a point to not look at the book either. I am really excited about her progress.

Not to leave Isaiah out...every day, as part of his chores, I make him say all his Sunday school verses up to the current week and all his Cubbies verses up to the current week. No sense in letting these young sponge minds go to waste! :)

  2. The story about William and Catherine Booth is crazy inspiring to me! It's great that they can learn about some of their heritage and of those who have gone before. I think it puts them into a different 'history' and that they see themselves in a different way. Awesome to hear!

The 'decomposers' of the world...you talking about Kanye West?

  3. Had to LOL about the Kanye West comment above.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with everyone. I'm really enjoying reading about it!
