Week 4, ECC

This was one crazy week! My college classes have been more time consuming than I expected. Also, we went on our first field trip this week. The Nebraska State Fair had a program called Nebraska's Largest Classroom where children could walk through the exhibits. To be honest, I couldn't tell how it was different from just walking through the exhibits on our own. Maybe there was a price break. Anyway, we drove out to Lincoln on Thursday morning (in the rain) and spent the morning at the fair. I think the kids enjoyed looking at the exhibits. I enjoyed the 4H exhibits the most. After lunch we left because it was cold and wet. I'm not the prepared kind of mom, so we didn't have long sleeves or jackets or rain slickers. Next time I'll know better.

As far as school goes, it was a good week. The girls had a test on their memory verse for the week and they both did well. We've been reading about Harriet Tubman, listing the character traits that she had. The girls are both doing very well in spelling. For English, Audrey is doing fine. Abigail's work is getting harder, well, maybe just more time-intensive. It seems like she's taking longer and longer to get her work done. I think she was distracted this week. Math is still going well. Abby is taking a while to complete that, too.

In Geography we learned about the United States. The girls did activities with a map of the US. On Friday they had a States quiz where Abby had to write the names of the states on the map. Audrey had to tell me the names of the states (as I pointed to them). I was impressed with how well they did. Abby missed only one state (New Hampshire) and Audrey missed twelve. For a second grader, I thought that was pretty good!

In Science we've been learning about different types of forests and trees. Andrew was most impressed when we went into the 4H building at the fair and Audrey saw the leaf/tree displays and identified them as deciduous or coniferous.

Music/Art had to do with the United States, so we listened to a song from the Omaha Indian Tribe. We also heard the Itsy Bitsy Spider. (We are using Wee Sing Songs from Around the World.) In art, we made a quilt block from paper instead of fabric. The girls really loved that project.

  1. Sounds like a great week...for a while there Sydney was taking forever to get done with her piano and it felt like we fought that battle for a lengthy period of time, but when it became normal, she just flies through it now. Once they know that regardless of the amount of time spent, they will still be required to do it, they realize that it is in their best interest just to do it as quickly as possible because then they get more play time.

Now, if they drag their feet and are let out of some work because of it, that would probably be a horrible precident (that's saying of course that they are just dragging their feet and not genuinely struggling with the work).

Enough of that...anyway, your trip looks like the kids had a lot of fun! Great pics of the art projects!!!

  2. It looks like you had a lot of fun at the State Fair! I'd like to take the kids to one someday. I love seeing the 4H exhibits, too...and dream my kids can come up with something like that. I had friends in 4H and they did the most amazing things.

I'm guessing the work probably is getting a little harder, which is good. We go through cycles with that in the subjects - like learning a new concept is harder, and it may take extra time for a few days, but then the lessons get shorter again as Sydney picks up the concept. But it's encouraging to see them understand and know that you're TEACHING them SOMETHING! ;)

Good job on listing the states, girls! That is impressive. We are doing just a basic geography this year, learning about maps and directions, but I hope to also teach Sydney the continents this year and maybe she'll learn all the states next year. ;)

Keep up the great work...and the consistent posting!
