Ok, back to the subject at hand. Audrey did a little better this week about not complaining and whining when it was time to do her work. I told her that getting her work done without complaining would earn her computer time. She loved that idea.
In Geography we learned about latitude and longitude, so Abby and I have been tracking Hurricane Bill on a map I printed out. I think I'm having more fun than Abby, but she's getting the idea of latitude and longitude. We also learned a song which helped us remember the names of the seven continents. Adam asked us to stop singing it today...
We were busy in Art/Cooking this week. On Tuesday we made "Hands Across the World" paper dolls. The girls dressed them up and we hung them on our cabinets. Then, today, we made a World cake. We made a chocolate cake and frosted it in blue frosting. Then Andrew outlined the continents in green gel. It was cute! I loved that Andrew got in on the action, too.
In Bible, we've been learning about the other religions around the world, such as Judaism, Hinduism, etc. I was glad that we didn't spend too much time on it, and always at the end of what I read there was a statement about how it measured up to Christianity. The girls could see that the other religions fall short of Christianity. We are also reading from the book "Kingdom Tales" and it is very good. I would compare it to the Narnia books. Andrew is reading that to the kids in the evenings.
Math, English and Spelling are all going well. I'm not thrilled with the English program that we are using, but I'll stick with it for a while anyway.
Here are some pictures from our Art and Cooking adventures this week...
Looks like you're having so much fun! Maybe Adam will learn the continents too? ;) I think it's so cool that Andrew is doing specific things with them, too. Ryan gets involved with reading aloud to Sydney, and I really appreciate that. Maybe he'll introduce her to sci-fi so I don't have to. ;) Anyway, what English program does MFW recommend? Just curious. I don't have any suggestions or anything, since I'm not really doing formal English yet. Is it reading/grammar/spelling or what? So excited to see next week's activities!!
ReplyDeleteOH yes...I'm curious too...what grammar/english program are you using?
ReplyDeleteLoved reading about this week. I love it that Andrew is supportive AND active! YAY Andrew!
You wouldn't happen to have the CD GEography songs..."North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Austrailia, Africa, Antartica these are the continents." ??? I love that CD. :-)
Joy and Mary, we are using Primary Language Lessons for Audrey. It doesn't include spelling, so we use Spelling by Sound and Structure, which I like so far. For Abigail we are using Intermediate Language Lessons and Writing Strands, level 4. These are what I'm not too happy with. They just seem odd to me, but I don't really know what I'm doing yet, so I'll stick with them for now. I think... =)
ReplyDeleteThe song we use for the continents was written by the creator of My Father's World. It is set to the tune of "Yankee Doodle." We are also using Wee Sing Around the World. =)
Just thought of something--have you heard of the book "Window on the World"? It's a really cool book that would work well w/ your religion study. It has a double page spread (or more) for each country around the world & it shows the needs of that country, whether or not we have missionaries there, prayer concerns for the country, etc. It's a geography, Bible/religion, history lesson all in one!
ReplyDeleteI like the part where your curriculum is giving information about the other worldviews that are out there and how they do compare with Christianity. I think it's more about ignorance of other beliefs that some believers are taken off guard when they head off on their own to college. Sometimes the "newness" of something can lead to acceptance, especially in a college environment where the new is generally greeted warmly. Some "shelter" their kids on purpose...I think it's a mistake. Anyway, great to hear and hopefully it's something we can do too!
ReplyDelete- Ryan (on Joy's account;)
Hi Liz! We are actually using that book! Small world... =)
ReplyDeleteHi Ryan! I agree with you that exposure to things is a good idea. I hope that we can give the kids enough info so they don't think they have to go searching on their own.
